Entering May, domestic garlic prices continued to weaken. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the national average wholesale price of garlic was CNY5.96 /Kg, on May 25, down 16.2% from the same period last month and 22.9% from the beginning of the year. Historical data shows that this is the first time since June 2020 that the wholesale price of garlic in the country has fallen below CNY6/Kg.
Due to the relatively low price of garlic, the general garlic farmers are waiting and reluctant to sell.At the same time, lower garlic prices have benefited exports. In March-April, garlic exports changed from the slump in January-February and resumed growth. In March, China exported 191,900 tons of garlic, an increase of 113.94% month-on-month and a year-on-year increase of 24.81%. In April, China exported 195,300 tons of garlic, an increase of 1.77% month-on-month and a year-on-year increase of 15.74%. The export volume in March hit a new high in the same period in 6 years. The export volume of garlic in April still achieved a slight month-on-month increase despite the high base in March. The increase in the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic made the export situation in April better. Shandong Province, Jiangsu Province and Henan Province are still my country's major export provinces. With the improvement of the epidemic prevention situation in Henan and Jiangsu, it is expected that the export volume of garlic in May will continue to grow, stimulated by the low domestic garlic price.
